Custom business websites

A business website, built by hand from $2,000.

SkyerWorks designs and hand-codes business websites: one-page sites from $800, five-page custom sites from $2,000 and expanded sites from $3,500, with a free first mockup before you commit to anything. There are no templates and no page builders. Every site is designed and built by Wayne Scire, who has been designing websites for about fifteen years and whose day job in IT is keeping systems fast and secure.

What each starting price includes

The $2,000 business website is the usual starting point: up to five custom-designed pages, mobile layouts, an inquiry form, search setup and a launch handover. Smaller and larger projects have their own starting points, and the price is fixed in a written proposal before the build begins.

Payment is 50% to begin and the balance before launch. Hosting for business sites is separate from the build and is covered by the care plans below.

How a hand-built site differs from Squarespace or Wix

A template builder is the right choice for many small businesses, and a custom site is the right choice when the template has started costing you customers. The difference shows up in speed, in what you own, and in how much of the design is actually yours.

SpeedDepends on the platform's scripts and your plan.Hand-coded pages, self-hosted fonts, nothing loaded from third parties unless you ask for it.
OwnershipThe site lives on the platform; export is partial at best.Your design, content and domain are yours after final payment.
Search setupBasic titles and descriptions; structured data varies by plan.Titles, descriptions, structured data, sitemap and redirects set up as part of the build.
Cost shapeA monthly or yearly subscription for as long as the site exists.A one-time build from $800 to $3,500, then optional care from $79 a month.
UpdatesYou edit in the builder. An editing system can be included if you ask at the start; otherwise a care plan covers a set number of hours.

If you are weighing the two, the guide Custom website vs Squarespace works through the cost over three years, speed, ownership and the signs that you have outgrown a template. If your current site is on a builder, a redesign moves your content across and keeps the page addresses that matter working.

How the site is built

Every SkyerWorks site is written by hand in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, which is why the pages are small, fast on phones and free of the scripts that slow template sites down.

  • Fast by construction. No page builder, no plugin stack. Fonts are hosted on your own domain, images are sized for the screens that load them, and nothing is requested from other companies' servers unless a feature needs it.
  • Built for search from day one. Each page gets a specific title and description, structured data that describes your business and services, a sitemap, and redirects from any old addresses. This site is built the same way, and its own pages are the proof.
  • Readable by everyone. Semantic headings, keyboard-friendly navigation, real text rather than text in images, and colour contrast checked against accessibility guidelines.
  • Installable. Sites can be set up as an installable web app, so a customer can add yours to a phone's home screen, and the shell keeps working when the signal drops.
  • Private by default. skyerworks.com loads no analytics or ad pixels; the only cookies are Google’s, set by the spam check on the contact form. Your site gets analytics if you want them, set up during the build and explained at handover.

Who the websites are for

Business websites get the same hand-built treatment: restaurants, trades, clinics, studios and shops that need a site that explains what they do and makes the next step easy.

The work page shows the kind of site each type of business gets: a restaurant with a living menu and table booking; a plumbing company with a one-question emergency triage; a dental practice with booking in three taps; a yoga studio with a weekly schedule and class passes; a roofer with a storm desk and an insurance-claim walkthrough; a photographer with cinematic galleries; a realtor with an illustrated town map and home finder. Each one is designed around the question its customers arrive with.

If your business is a villa, a resort or a wedding venue, the website usually pairs with an interactive property map or a 3D driving-directions preview so guests can find you and find their way around once they arrive.

Redesigning a website you already have

Yes, SkyerWorks redesigns existing sites. The first job is deciding what to keep, what your customers struggle to find and what needs a fresh start.

Your proposal covers moving your content across, keeping important page addresses working with redirects so you do not lose search rankings, and reconnecting the tools that have to stay, such as booking systems or payment links. The price follows the same starting points as a new site, because the design work is the same; what changes is how much content there is to move.

What happens after launch

Hosting and care are separate from the build, in three monthly plans from $79. You can also host elsewhere; your design, content and domain are yours.

Care plans (per month)
PlanPriceIncludes
Hosting & care$79Standard hosting, monitoring, backups and applicable software maintenance.
A little more help$149Care plus up to 1 hour of content updates each month.
Room to grow$299Care plus up to 3 hours of updates each month. Additional work $100 an hour.

Update hours reset monthly and do not roll over; new features and redesigns are quoted separately. The guide What does a website care plan include? explains what to look for in any care plan, including the ones that are not ours.

The process, in four steps

  1. The call

Fifteen minutes about your business: what you do, who you do it for, what the site has to achieve.

  2. The free mockup

Wayne designs your homepage. You see it before you pay a thing, then say yes or say what to change.

  3. The build

Every page, built from the approved design, with two revision rounds. Your part is to send what you have.

  4. Live and looked after

Launched on your domain, handed over with analytics and access, and updated when plans change.

The process page goes through timelines, what you supply and how the price is fixed before work starts.

Questions about business websites

How much does a custom business website cost?

At SkyerWorks, one-page sites start at $800, five-page business websites at $2,000 and expanded sites at $3,500, all in USD and fixed in a written proposal before the build. Published pricing guides generally put agency-built small-business sites at $3,000 to $10,000 for a basic site, so a one-person studio with no overheads sits well below that.

How long does a website take to build?

Your proposal includes a launch date, agreed before any payment. The biggest variable is how quickly photos and text arrive; a one-page site with content in hand is a short project, and a five-page site with custom features takes longer. If you have a hard deadline, say so on the first call and it becomes part of the plan.

Do I own my website?

Yes. Your domain is registered in your name, and after final payment your design, content and domain are yours to keep; any shared map engine is licensed to you for your site, forever. If you ever move to another host or designer, you take your design and content with you. Any third-party software or subscriptions are listed in your proposal.

What do you need from me to start?

A fifteen-minute call, then whatever you have: your logo, photos, any existing text, and the questions customers ask you most. Starting packages use your supplied photos and draft content; copywriting can be added to the scope.

Can I update the site myself?

If you want to edit menus, posts, services or galleries yourself, say so at the start, and an editing system with a short training session becomes part of the scope. Otherwise a care plan covers a set number of update hours each month.

Is hosting included?

Not in the build price for business websites. Hosting and care start at $79 a month and include monitoring, backups and software maintenance; you are also free to host the files anywhere you like.

What does the free mockup include?

After a short call confirms scope and budget, Wayne designs one first-pass homepage, free, so you can see the direction before committing. Revisions and the full build begin after you approve the proposal and pay the 50% deposit.
